Lasik in Singapore has become increasingly popular. For over 20 years, over 13 million individuals have already gone through Lasik. But, what is it exactly? Does this type of surgery really work? If it really works, what sorts of benefits does it offer?

Lasik, short for Laser-Assisted in-situ keratomileusis, is a famous laser eye surgery performed by an eye surgeon to treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. During this procedure, an eye specialist uses a specialized laser to reshape the cornea or the transparent part of the person's eye. When this is completely performed, the cornea can do a better job of focusing the light that will enter the eyes and improves visual acuity.

An eye specialist will normally recommend the candidate of Lasik surgery to stop putting on contact lenses approximately two to four weeks prior undergoing such procedure. This is advised as wearing contact lenses can alter the exact shape of the cornea. An eye doctor will then perform an extensive eye examination to be certain that the patient's eyes are just healthy enough to go through the eye surgery.

The medical-surgical eye specialist will then evaluate the cornea's shape and thickness, refractive errors, pupil size and any eye conditions that the patient has. Aside from that, he will note the overall health history of the person and check for any medications that are being taken by the person who is about to undergo Lasik. This is done to determine if the latter is ready for the laser eye surgery. In addition, he will examine the moistness of the patient's eyes and may also prescribe a precautionary treatment in order to reduce the risk of having dry eyes after LASIK surgery is completed.

Before the surgical procedure is carried out, the ophthalmologist may prescribe medications and apply eye drops to numb the subject's eyes. Such medications are given to make the patient feel relaxed during the surgical operation. Aside from that, they are also intended to alleviate any types of discomfort as the Lasik surgical procedure is being done.

During the Lasik surgery, the patient's will be positioned under. Then, a lid speculum will be used to keep the subject or the patient's eyelids open. The subject's eyeball will be held in place through the use of a suction ring as the cornea will be lifted and flattened. After these steps are completed, the eye specialist will cut a small flap within the patient's cornea and folds it back once again.

An ultra-violet beam then reshapes the patient's cornea based on the patient or subject's eye exam. Next, the flap will be replaced to serve as some sort of bandage. The entire Lasik surgical procedure is only going to take less than half an hour. This will already cover both eyes.

Follow-up studies suggest that LASIK has a high success rate. Around 90% of patients confirm that they have acquired their desired vision after the laser eye surgery. They say that their vision is corrected nearly after the procedure and even have a dramatic reduction in contact lens or eyeglass dependence. Many of them say that they no longer need to wear them at all. Aside from that, they have only experienced very little pain during the surgery and they did not even have to worry about any bandages or stitches after LASIK.

With all these, there's no wonder why Lasik in Singapore has become very famous. If you are nearsighted, farsighted or have an oddly shaped cornea, Lasik might work for you. However, refractive surgery like Lasik isn't for everyone. It is best that you discuss all aspects of the procedure with a medical and surgical eye specialist before undergoing Lasik.
